Freddie Hayes Segrist

May 7, 1953 — May 13, 2024

Freddie Hayes Segrist, 71, of Topeka, passed away Monday, May 13, 2024 after a long illness of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). He was born May 7, 1953 in Holton, Kansas the eighth child of John and Inez (Armstrong) Segrist.

He lived in rural Jackson County on a farm. Fred attended Circleville Elementary School and graduated from Holton High School in 1971. The majority of Fred's career was spent driving as an over the road truck driver where he saw a lot of America, met a lot of people and drove over one million miles accident and ticket free. Fred was a member of Berryton United Methodist Church.

Fred married his wife Billie just shy of 50 years ago, October 12, 1974. She survives.

Fred was a member of FFA in high school. He started working as a young teen and never stopped. Fred helped his parents at their business, Jack's Tavern, in Holton. Growing up Fred enjoyed riding horses and fishing in his spare time. As the youngest sibling, he had a special relationship with many of his nieces and nephews and enjoyed making tunnels in the hay so they could play in them when they came to visit.

Fred had a variety of jobs in life, but his favorites were those of husband, dad and grandpa or "Papaw" as several of his grandsons called him. Fred and Billie enjoyed traveling, dancing, camping and boating. Fred was active with his children in many activities and enjoyed watching his grandsons pursue their interests. He was quick to share a story, a smile or ask a silly question to anyone he met and through his friendly personality, never met a stranger. He loved Billie very much and told her often. They took every opportunity to spend time together, travel, dance when the music played and enjoyed one another's company when they were home. Fred was always willing to help his family by running errands, fixing things or talking through a solution and spent several years offering support to and caring for his mother-in-law, Crystal.

Fred is survived by Billie, Wyatt (Tina) Segrist, Sarah (Ben) Sanders all of Berryton, KS, grandchildren Tannim Segrist, Aden (Bethany) and Wade Shute and Hayes Sanders. Fred and Billie also claimed an additional daughter later in life; Kendra (Brian) Pratt and their children Marishka, Myer, Marin Pratt. Sisters, Donna (Gene) Murrow, Mona McManigal, in-laws Trena (Don) Klenklen. He also has many nieces and nephews that were very special to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Duane, Warren, Galen and sisters Regina, Virginia and great-granddaughter Raelyn Shute. Fred's father and mother in-law, Billy and Crystal Hill also preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Fred's Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2024 at the Berryton United Methodist Church where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time.
