Garland Pearce

Garland "Duane" Pearce, 70, Topeka, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at home.

Duane was born July 10, 1937 in Amarillo, TX, the son of Garland and Georgia (Smith) Pearce. He moved to Salina, KS with his parents and brother David in 1946. He graduated from Salina High School in 1956, the first class to graduate from the new high school and from K-State in 1961 where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Upon graduation from K-State he served as Salina's City Planner until he moved his family to Overland Park, KS to take a position with the newly created Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He completed his employment with the Federal Government in the Office of Surface Mining in K.C., MO, retiring in 1995.

He was on the football, golf and wrestling teams in high school and attended Arkansas City Junior College from 1957-58 on a Football Scholarship. He was an avid supporter of K-State athletics and held season football tickets since graduation.

When his children were old enough to participate in sports, he coached their baseball, softball and football teams. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he took a very active part in their lives.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Topeka, Kansas.

Duane married Janet Holm on August 22, 1959. She died in 1993. He married Vera Sutton on March 25, 1995 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors are children, Julie Pearce, Jeffrey Pearce and Jill Pearce; grandchildren, Alexis and Zachary Pearce; brothers, David and Dan Pearce; nieces, Lisa Supon and Debbie Scott; stepdaughters, Julie Hall and Jolene Carter; and step grandchildren, Reilly and Alexander Hall, and Collin and Adam Carter. He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at First Lutheran Church in Topeka. Graveside committal services will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. Duane will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
