Gary Marshall Smith

August 11, 1940 — May 29, 2014

Gary Marshall Smith, 73, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014 at his home in Topeka.

Gary was born August 11, 1940, to James & Neva (Bates) Smith and grew up attending school in Wichita, Kansas and Searcy, Arkansas. He joined the Navy where he served on the destroyer U.S.S. John Paul Jones for four years. After he was honorably discharged in 1961, he began his career as a real estate appraiser for Cole, Layer, and Trumble, Co. doing mass appraisals in several states, including Kansas, Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio, and Alabama.

While working in Allen County, Gary met Delores Werner of Kincaid, Kansas, and they were married on April 2, 1965, in Great Bend. During their happy 49 years together, they had one son and two daughters: Tracy Smith (Topeka, KS), Teresa Smith (Overland Park, KS) and Tiffany Smith-Traub (Lenexa, KS); a daughter-in-law, Venesa Smith; a son-in-law, Nicholas Traub; and three grandchildren: Kristie (Matt) Campbell, Cameron and Casey.

In March, 1976, Gary joined the ranks as public servant becoming the Allen County appraiser from 1976 to 1982. In March 1982, he and his family moved to Topeka where he served as Shawnee County Appraiser. In 1992, he joined the Kansas Dept. of Revenue and began Kansas Appraisal Service, a private appraisal agency. He served as President of the Kansas County Appraisers Association from 1982-1983.

Gary's family always brought him the most happiness, and he was always first to lend a hand when needed. With the help of his wife, family, and friends, he lived life to the fullest. He had an easy laugh, a calm voice, and a passionate opinion. He always appreciated a good project, and is survived by an incomplete master bathroom, a few blank Bob Ross canvases, and a 1970 Chevy pickup.

In addition to his immediate family, Gary is survived by his sisters: Rosalie Thomas (Wichita, KS), Gwen Sandefur (Wichita, KS), and Marcia Mowrer (Monticello, AR). His extended family includes his mother-in-law, Mary Werner of Bronson, KS; Tom Werner of Russell, KS; Leo & Vicki Werner of Newton, KS; Leona Werner of Chanute, KS; Sheryl Werner of Parsons, KS; Lyle Osborne of Lenexa, KS; Gary Hammer of Williamsburg, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jeanette Hammer.
