Genevieve Lylah Nyman

Genevieve "Genny" Lylah Nyman, 98, Topeka, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2012 at McCrite Plaza. Genny was born September 5, 1913, the daughter of Cecil Bertha Lewis and Roy William Nelson in Topeka, Kansas. She was married to Carl W. Nyman on July 7, 1934. He preceded her in death on October 22, 1979.

Genny was a graduate of Topeka High School and pursued educational courses, workshops and seminars following graduation and marriage. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she served on various committees and taught Sunday School and Bible School. She began her working career at Capper Publications (Stauffer's/Morris Publications) from 1931-1936. She was employed at Crosby Brothers, 1944-1948; Security Benefit Life Ins. Co., 1950-1956 and at Menninger for 33 years, 1958-1991, where she was secretary to Herbert Modlin, M.D. for 24 years.

Genny was a member of Professional Secretaries, Int. for 23 years, from 1967-1990. She served as Kaw Chapter President, 1972-1973; Kansas Division Secretary, 1974-1975; Kansas Division President, 1975-1976. She also served on chapter and division committees. Genny was honored by Kaw Chapter as Secretary of the Year in 1973 and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1987. She was a member of the Menninger Hilltoppers Retirement Club and served as Secretary for 20 years, 1984-2004. She was a member of the Arab Shrine Nobelles Club and served as Secretary-Treasurer for 13 years, 1986-1999 and as Secretary for two years, 2000-2002. She served as a volunteer for numerous community organizations.

Survivors include one daughter, Lylah J. (Rex-deceased) Owen of Englewood, CO; one son, James C. (Judy) Nyman of Topeka, KS; a nephew, Larry (Annette) Hancks of Kansas City, KS; a sister, Thelma Hancks, preceded her in death. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Barry (Kristi) Owen, Jill (Mike-deceased) Arnhold, Doug Nyman, Lori (Ed) Mercer; two step-grandchildren: Rob (Lu) Benge and Greg Benge: six great-grandchildren Drew (Krista) Nyman and Hunter Nyman, Riley, Quinci and Jason Owen and Cade Arnhold; two step- great- grandchildren, Jessica (Wyatt) Lockwood and Gracy Baker and one step-great-great- grandson, Tyler and two great-great- grandchildren "on the way".

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2012 at Mount Hope Mausoleum Chapel, 4700 SW 17th, Topeka. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
