Topeka

George Monroe Rivers III, affectionately known as Monroe Rivers, was born on March 18, 1943, in Walterboro, South Carolina. He departed this life on February 17, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas, surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, laughter, and cherished memories.

For over 50 years, George dedicated his career to Geodetic Surveying, making significant contributions to the field through his role at the National Geodetic Survey, NOAA. His early career took him across the United States, where he lived and worked in every state as a surveyor. George culminated his professional journey as the NGS State Advisor to Kansas, a position that showcased his expertise and commitment to the profession. Beyond his professional accomplishments, George found joy in the camaraderie of his coworkers, often engaging in friendly competition over games of pool, singing and picnics. George cherished the memories of his traveling crew, which were like family as they moved from place to place.

An individual of many talents, Monroe was a strong man who enjoyed sharing jokes and had a knack for leaving a lasting impression on those he encountered. His warm Southern charm and good-natured humor brought joy to many, and could light up any room with his jokes or music. He enjoyed his 12-string guitar and singing with his family and friends.

In his younger days, George attended Walterboro High School, where he not only enjoyed playing football but also excelled in shot put. George once achieved notable success by winning the Utah regional arm wrestling competition.

George is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Catherine Rivers; his daughter Lorri CJ Rivers; and his sisters Dorthey King, Nancy Geddings, and Susan Rivers. He is also mourned by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will continue to cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his son John A. Durfee, his father George Monroe Rivers Jr., his mother Bernice Rivers, his sister Roebern Rivers, and his brothers-in-law Jerry King and Ed Geddings.

George Monroe Rivers III will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for the immense love he brought to his family and the joy he imparted to all who knew him. His spirit will remain alive in the hearts of those fortunate enough to call him family and friend.

Celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial contribution can be given to Door Step.
