George W. Bowers

George W. Bowers, 79, of Topeka, died Friday, October 15, 2004 at his residence. He was born on January 19, 1925 at Oak Ridge, Missouri, the son of George W. and Mary A. Lape Bowers. He was an Army veteran and a Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He came to Topeka in 1953. He was a self-employed painter. He was a member of Philip Billard Post No. 1650, V.F.W. and Post No. 400 of the American Legion. He married Leota M. Griffin on March 3, 1954 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Jack, Billy and Jimmy all of Topeka, two daughters, Mary Ann Walton of Wahneta, Florida, Nancy Mehmel of Topeka, thirteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two brothers, Jack and Paul and two sisters, Helen and Juanita. He was preceded in death by one son, David L. Bowers on November 10, 1998. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Newcomer Family Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Penwell-Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Bowers will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. Tuesday until service time. Memorial contributions may be given to the Georeg W. Bowers Memorial Fund c/o Newcomer Family Funeral Home, 4020 S.W. 6th Ave., Topeka Ks. 66606.
