Gerald Wilford "Jerry" Franklin III, fondly known as Jerry, left this world on December 6, 2024, in Topeka, Kansas, surrounded by family after a life well-lived. Born on July 6, 1951, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, Jerry was a beacon of joy and kindness to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jerry had an impressive career spanning 27 years at Santa Fe Railway and 21 years at Shriver Signal Services. His commitment extended far beyond his job; he was a devoted member of the community and enjoyed serving others as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Jerry's personality was characterized by a delightful goofiness that drew others to him. His great sense of humor was infectious, ensuring that everyone around him smiled. He was a loving husband, patient father, and caring friend, whose strong faith guided him throughout his life, providing an anchor for himself and those he loved.
Jerry cherished spending time outdoors, often retreating to his favorite place, Pomona Lake. Jerry enjoyed a wide array of hobbies, including collecting stamps, camping, Dutch oven cooking, model railroading, trainspotting, singing, and playing various musical instruments.
Jerry's proudest accomplishments included coaching in the Special Olympics for 35 years in numerous sports, a testament to his dedication to inclusivity and support for all individuals. He mentored in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America program as well as enjoying his time as a bass-baritone singer in the Topeka Symphony Choir. He also poured his love and efforts into nurturing his family especially his grandchildren, which were always a source of joy for him.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Patricia Franklin; his children, Jay (Julie) Franklin, Katie (Bill) Otto, James Franklin, and Jeremy Franklin; as well as 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is also survived by his brother Rod Franklin.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father Gerald Franklin Jr., mother Louella Franklin, son Adam Franklin, and brother Charles Franklin.
As we remember Jerry Franklin, we celebrate a man whose life was characterized by love, humor, and unwavering support for his family and community. His legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 16, 2024 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3611 SW Jewell Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66611 where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.
Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. is assisting the family with service arrangements.
