Jerry Rus was born January 31, 1947 in Norfolk, Nebraska, and died October 4, 2015 at home in Topeka, Kansas after a yearlong battle with leukemia (AML).
Jerry was raised in Norfolk, Nebraska, attending Christ Lutheran and Norfolk Public Schools. He received bachelor's degrees from Lutheran colleges in Indiana and Nebraska. He taught Lutheran School in Cleveland, Ohio. After receiving a Master's of Social Work degree from the University of Nebraska in 1977, he worked at Mosaic and Sheltered Living in a variety of direct service, administrative, and training positions in the field of developmental disabilities.
Many knew Jerry through his hobbies which he approached with passion, curiosity, and an analytical mind. He was legend for his fishing, Christmas lights, his bible study, gardening, and rug hooking, to name a few.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, William Rus, Catherine and Carl Mumm and grandparents, Louis and Meta Frohloff. Also preceding him were in-laws, Carl and Anna Stehl, Rudy Stehl, Vernon Souders, and Dan Cunning. He is survived and missed by his wife, Marty; sons, David (Heather) and Christopher (Dawn); grandchildren, Peter and Grace Rus, Autumn and Dorian James; sisters, Susan Wittler, Helen Rus Miller; sisters in law, Susan Stehl Stohs, Rebecca Souders, Dorothy Stehl, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Jerry's Life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 9th at First Lutheran Church in Topeka. A visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 8th at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service in Topeka.
Inurnment will occur at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 14th at Wyuka Cemetery, 36th & "O" in Lincoln, Nebraska.
In lieu of flowers, Jerry has asked that memorials be made to the First Lutheran Adult Education Fund.
