Dr. Crumb was a retired educator and university administrator for Emporia State University and Western Kentucky University. He was born December 21, 1927 in Burlingame, the son of Clifford and Katie Turner Crumb.
He was married to Neva J. Graber on November 24, 1950 in Pretty Prairie. She survives as does his brother Marvin Crumb (Luann), his daughters Judith K. Ball and Nancy J. Hinten (Marv), and his son Steven R. Crumb (Susan). He was preceded in death by his sister, Lucille Marrs (Harvey), his brother Dean Crumb (Ella Lee), his son James A. Crumb (Elizabeth), and his son-in-law Larry Ball. He had 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Before completing high school, he received his orders to report to the Navy, eventually serving on a Destroyer from 1945-1947. After an honorable discharge, he completed undergraduate and graduate degrees, eventually receiving his Doctorate in Physics.
As a resident of Emporia, he first taught at Emporia State University and then moved into grant and contract administration. As an Eagle Scout, he poured many years into youth as a Scoutmaster for the Jayhawk Area Council. He regularly attended First United Methodist Church.
In 1972, he took an administrative position at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he received numerous science education awards. He was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church. He eventually retired from the university in 1989.
Upon retirement, he purchased the family farm near Harveyville on which he raised cattle and various crops. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed upland bird hunting and fishing. He won the Kansas Wildlife Habitat Award for his efforts to improve the habitat for the game on his farm. As a result, the farm has become a legacy for his grandchildren to enjoy hunting and fishing.
His last several years were given to authoring a book with his brother Marvin called "Crumbs Along the Trail". This book tells of the history of the Crumb family as they moved from the colonies to settle in the prairies of eastern Kansas.
