Grace Kathryn (Smerchek) Hart passed away peacefully in her home on August 2, 2018, after celebrating her 97th birthday with family and friends on July 19. Grace was born to Fred and Kathryn (Lorenc) Smerchek on July 19, 1921, in Irving, Kansas, on a farm near Blue Rapids. She graduated from Blue Rapids High School in 1939. Grace married Ben Hart on July 20, 1944. Ben preceded her in death.
Grace retired from her secretarial position at KNEA in 1991 after 26 years. There she met her life-long friend, Candy, who survives as an honorary member of the family.
Grace is survived by a daughter, Janet, and sons Ben (Carol), and Richard (Irene), 8 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Viola Stryker and Martha Salzer.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 6, 2018 at 1:30PM at Wakarusa Presbyterian Church where Grace was a member for many years. If you knew Grace, you are a lucky person. She was a blessing to so many.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to: Wakarusa Presbyterian Church, 10135 SW Jordan Rd., Wakarusa, KS 66546 or Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st, Topeka or Interim Health Care, Home and Hospice, 1251 SW Arrowhead, Suite 103, Topeka, KS 66604.
Inurnment will be at Shawnee Center Cemetery, Wakarusa, Kansas at a later date.
