Grace Joanna Williams, 90, of Topeka, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at Midland Hospice House. She was born on March 19, 1920 in Topeka, the daughter of Jesse and Myrtle Porter Smith.
She resided in Topeka for most of her life. Grace graduated from Seaman High School and attended the University of Kansas. She graduated from Menninger Bible School and was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church where she sang in the church choir, participated in the Susie A. Washington Circle and served as the financial secretary. She was also a member of the Fleur-de-lis Art and Literary Club.
Grace married Bennie Lee Williams on October 16, 1944 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on July 11, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Wilbur Smith and her sister, Amy Anderson. Survivors include her children; Bennie L. Williams, Jr. of Los Angeles, Richard L. (DeAngelis) Williams, Joanna (Thomas) Tyree, Shirley Reed, Robert Williams all of Topeka and Betty Neal of Olathe, 24 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren, her sister, Lucretia Anderson of Topeka and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Grace will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel.
