Grant V. Niven, 85, passed away January 20th 2016 at his home in Kettle Falls, WA. He was fighting Alzheimer's Disease. He was born May 27, 1930 in Topeka to Clarence and Gayle Niven. He was raised in Topeka where he met and married Margret "Liz" Shrimplin on October 21, 1950. They had three children, Sandra, David, and Daniel.
Grant and Liz lived in Pueblo Colorado, for 13 years, then returned to Topeka. They lived at Lake Wabaunsee for several years, and in 2007 moved to Washington State.
Grant is survived by his children: Sandie (Red) James of Kettle Falls WA; David (Janette) Niven of Silver Lake: Dan (Kimberly) Niven of Colorado Springs, CO. His grandchildren: Jeremy (Sheri) Niven, Matt (Alli) Niven, Jeffrey James, Christopher (Becky) James, Jessie (Robby) Burkhart, Lucas, Sara, and Kari Niven; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Liz, his sister Elizabeth Doores, and his great-granddaughter Ashlyn James.
Grant proudly served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged. He chose a career with the Santa Fe Railroad, and he retired as the System Fuel Supervisor covering the entire system from Illinois, to Texas and California. He was a hard working man, usually working at least 2 jobs and found it difficult to "just sit and visit". He loved woodworking. He could fix anything whether plumbing, electrical, or even renovating houses. He passed that talent on to his sons and grandsons.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka located at 1717 SW Topeka Blvd. on January 30th, from 10am to 2pm in the Emerald 1 Room. There will be a Deli Buffet provided, and those who knew our Dad are welcome to attend.
A Private graveside service will be held on Friday January 29th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in memory of Grant Niven to: Hospice of Spokane, 121 S Arthur, Spokane, WA 99210
