Gregory Dean Edson

September 13, 1966 — December 11, 2020

Gregory Dean Edson, DDS, passed away at his home in Austin, TX. on Friday, December 11, 2020 after a short battle with cancer. Friends and family will gather to celebrate his life and share stories beginning at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, August 7th at the Rocking V Ranch, 7325 SW 93rd St., Wakarusa, KS 66546. The family requests casual dress and the color purple is acceptable.

Greg was born on September 13, 1966 in Topeka, KS. to Dean B. and Betty J. Edson. He grew up in Topeka playing every sport available in the area, except one. He graduated from Washburn Rural High School, and attended Washburn University one year on a football scholarship; then transferred to Kansas State University. At K-State, he worked in what is now the Johnson Cancer Center, which served to fuel his love of medicine and science. After earning his degree at KSU he moved to San Antonio, TX, where he attended the Texas University Dental School.

Following graduation, he spent a year at the Veteran's Administration in Leavenworth, KS, where he completed a residency. He then returned to Texas to pursue practicing dentistry. Greg purchased his dental practice in the mid-1990's where he developed a loyal following of patients who appreciated his kindness, his gentle approach and his willingness to take calls after hours.

He met his love, Tammy, in Austin and they began dating in 2005. They were married on October 20, 2006 in the Loretto Chapel, Santa Fe, New Mexico. On March 9, 2009, the couple welcomed "the light of their lives", Ryan Michael Edson. There was no prouder father! Armed with action photos from Ryan's first step to his last baseball tournament, he would gladly share that his son was indeed the most amazing, special child he had ever known. Greg coached Ryan's teams at every opportunity. Nothing brought him more joy! Just as in his chosen career, his kind demeanor and calm approach had a lasting impact on the numerous young men on his teams. Coach Greg, drawing upon his own Dad and various coaches he had throughout his life; Greg turned sport lessons into life lessons that will continue to funnel through generations.

Greg is survived by his wife, Tammy and his son, Ryan. Also surviving are his mom, Betty; his sister, Gail (Troy) Halterman, along with their boys Will and Nick. In addition his father-in-law, Mike (Kathy) Novak; his mother-in-law, Linda; sister-in-law, Jennifer (Tony) Martellato; and nephew, A.J. There are many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends too numerous to list in places near and far. He was preceded in death by his father, Dean.

Tammy and the entire family offer our thanks and appreciation to all who have shared kind words and given love and support over the past months. So many have done extraordinary things to help in numerous ways; making it impossible to list them all.
