H. Dean Garwood

H. Dean Garwood, 79, of Topeka, died Friday, May 7, 2004 at a Topeka hospital. He was born on November 12, 1924 in Topeka, the son of Harold Donald and Ruth Annetta Zirkle Garwood. He graduated from Berryton High School in May of 1942. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII, serving from May 29, 1943 until April 2, 1946, attaining the rate of Pharmacist Mate 1/c. He attended Washburn University and graduated from the University of Kansas with an AB degree majoring in entomology in June of 1950. In July of 1950, he accepted a position with Schendel Pest Control. In November of 1953, he accepted the position as the first pest control entomologist for the Kansas Entomological Commission which became the Entomological Division of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture. He retired on June 1, 1988. He continued to act as a consultant for Augestine Pest Control in Overland Park, Ks. and Schendel Pest Control in Topeka. He received the Kansas Pest Control Association Outstanding Service Award in 1981, the Kansas Pest Control Association Man Of The Year Award in 1985, the National Plant Board Service Award in 1986, the National Plant Board Distinguished Achievement Award in 1988, the Entomological Society of America Distinguished Achievement Award In Regulatory Entomology in 1988 and the 2002 Kansas Pest Control Association Hall of Fame Award. He was a long time member of the Berryton United Methodist Church serving in many offices for the church board and was active with the Golden Times and sang in the church choir. He was a 50 year member of the International Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Topeka Downtown Kiwanis Club and helped to form the Berryton Kiwanis Club. He served on the board at Berryton High School and in 1961 served on the consolidated school board of Shawnee Heights U.S.D. 450. He served as the Entomologist Leader of Riverside 4H Club and was a member of the Wagoneers Camping Club. He married Bernadine Nordstrom on May 25, 1946 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include one son; Darrell Dean Garwood of Topeka, three daughters; Albertha "Albie" Morrison of Topeka, Carla J. Bacon of Tecumseh and Carrie Walstrom Bell of Topeka, six grandsons and 1 granddaughter, three sisters; Lois Brobst of Auburn, Kathryn Moore of Morris, Illinois and Pauline Mitchell of Las Vegas, Nevada. He was preceded in death by two sisters; Ruth Ann Day and Margaret Piercy and 1 brother; Charles Garwood. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Berryton United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Lynn Creek Cemetery. Mr. Garwood will lie in state after Noon Monday at Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Monday evening.
