H. Thomas (Tom) Flanagan, 90, Topeka, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2012. Tom was born July 15, 1922, the third of six sons of James and Mae Flanagan. His brothers, Jim, Jack, Bill, Dick and Jerry preceded him in death. After graduating from Dowling High School in Des Moines, Iowa he worked in a defense plant for a year prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps in October, 1942.
During World War II, Tom served in the 322nd squadron of the 14th (Flying Tigers) Air Force, Kunming, China for 15 months and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf cluster. At war's end he attended Iowa State University for two years and graduated from Drake University, Des Moines, IA in 1951 with a B.S. in Business Administration. During college and for several years after, he was employed by the American Automobile Association as an adult driver education instructor, membership department manager, and traffic safety consultant. Most of Tom's business career was in the Safety Department of Insurance companies, where he earned the designations of Certified Safety Professional and Certified Hazard Control Manager. He retired from Safeco Insurance Company on December 31, 1984 after 17 years with the company, 8 years as St. Louis Division Manager of the Loss Control Department.
He moved to Topeka in August, 1985 and was a member of Unity Church of Christianity.
Tom is survived by his wife of 67 years, Vinci; son Thomas J., Los Angeles, CA; son Patrick K. (Wendy), Crawfordville, FL; son Jon V., Park Hills, MO; and daughter Michele, Topeka, KS; as well as 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons.
Memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd. Cremation is planned.
