Harold Dean Bernhardt

January 25, 1955 — September 13, 2018

Harold Dean Bernhardt, 63, of Tecumseh, passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born January 25, 1955 in Topeka, the son of Harold J. and Novallene (Casey) Bernhardt.

Harold graduated from Shawnee Heights High School in 1973. He farmed with his father until 1976. He also worked for Midwest Machine Works, Topeka Railway and PLM as a railcar inspector until 1988. He became self-employed and owned Midwest Professional Services which consisted of parking lot sweeping, vacuum tank pumping and a landfill. During that time, he passed tests for FEMA, flood control levees and emergency disasters. He did environmental work for Hills Pet Foods, Del Monte and Dupont.

Harold was a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Relief and Brotherhood of Railway Union Local No. 44. He repaired the Union Pacific and American Freedom Train in 1976 which was the Bicentennial and was given an award by the President of the United States.

Harold collected classic cars and had them restored. He built a full-size replica of a Texaco Gas Station with pumps etc. at his previous home and the cars and gas station became his pride and joy. He was very proud to show people his cars and gas station. The gas station was featured in a classic car magazine out of Florida. Several people would bring their old cars to have pictures taken of them parked beside the gas station. He loved big semi-trucks, racing, rat rods and also rebuilt lamps out of the 1800's. He also loved his cat and her kittens.

Survivors include his father and one sister, Darleen Bernhardt of Tecumseh, several cousins and many friends.
