Harris Kent Stubbings, 89, Topeka, passed away July 15, 2018 at Brewster Place.
He was born on January 16, 1929, in Topeka, the son of Samuel Harris Stubbings and Dessa Shaw Stubbings. He married Elizabeth Joan Garner, August 25, 1951, in Baltimore where he was attending a U.S. Army Intelligence School at Ft. Holabird. Kent served in the Army in 1951-1953, stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict.
Kent is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, four sons and two daughters: Brian David (JoAnn) Stubbings, Hinsdale, IL; Karen Renee Bransgrove (Gary) Cadwallader, Centennial, CO; Kendra Jeanne (Curt) Carter, Lake Conroe, TX; Kyle Kevin Stubbings, Duluth, GA; Dirk Arlen (Kristi) Stubbings, Winnipeg, Canada; Curtis Mark (Kelley) Stubbings, The Woodlands, TX; grandchildren Maria and Peter Stubbings, Austin (Audra) and Christopher (Julia) Bransgrove, Carolyn and Lucy Stubbings, Bryce and Avery Stubbings, Eric and Paige Stubbings; step-grandchildren Charles and Chris Carter; great-grandson, William Alan Bransgrove; and loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Kent is preceded in death by his sisters, June Stubbings Sheldon and Audrey Stubbings Dial; son-in-law, Alan Bransgrove and daughter-in-law, Beth Stubbings.
He graduated from Topeka High School in 1946 and from Washburn University in 1950 with a BBA degree. Kent worked for the Topeka Capital-Journal for 37 years, retiring as editor of the news desk in 1991. He was a current member of Town and Country Christian Church after attending Central Park and Northland churches for many years, serving as deacon and elder when asked.
Kent's hobby was his family, attending the many school functions necessary for a busy family. Kent was also very good at improving the house on NE 43rd St. by building a three car garage, new bathrooms as well as putting down the floors while the house was being built.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Town & Country Christian Church, 4925 SW 29th. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2018 at Dove Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Brewster Place, Town and Country Christian Church, or Midland Care.
