Harry Richard Cox

November 26, 1939 — March 6, 2021

Harry Richard Cox, 81, of Topeka, passed away at Plaza West Healthcare Center on Saturday, March 6, 2021, after being in the care of Elara Caring Hospice.

He was born November 26, 1939, in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, the son of Capt. Art D. and Doris (Hall) Cox. The family eventually moved to Destin, Florida, where he helped his father run a sport fishing charter boat.

At age 21, Rich joined the United States Navy, and served two tours in Vietnam, in 1964 and 1966. During his service on an aircraft carrier, he was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

He married Kathleen G. Fleming on June 11, 1964, in Venice, California, and was sent to Vietnam for his first tour only four days after their wedding.

Upon discharge from the military, Rich and his wife had a daughter, Heather Richelle, in 1968. They then moved from California to Topeka, where Kathie's parents lived.

He was employed as a maintenance technician with Merchants National Bank for 17 years, Brewster Place for one year, and the Shawnee County Jail for 18 years.

Rich's wife, Kathie, preceded him in death in 2013, in Topeka.

He enjoyed coin collecting, gemstone jewelry making, metal detecting, and wood crafting. He adored animals and had many cats and dogs over the years, and enjoyed caring for the birds and squirrels in his back yard. His last wish was to donate money to the Topeka Helping Hands Humane Society.

Rich had a good heart, was a man of integrity, and was a hard worker. He always had a smile and kind word for everyone he met.

He is survived by his daughter, Heather Cox Klingbeil, of Topeka.

Honoring Rich's request, cremation is planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st Street, Topeka, KS 66604 (or online at hhhstopeka.org).

Dove Cremations and Funerals - Southwest Chapel is assisting the family.
