Hazel R. Miles

Hazel R. Miles, 92, of Topeka, formerly of Carbondale, passed away May 9, 2015. She was born September 12, 1922 in Whiting, Kansas to Charles and Ruth Chick. She graduated from Whiting High School in 1940. She married Vernice "Vern" E. Miles in October of 1946 at Ottawa, Kansas. They moved to Carbondale, Kansas in 1949.
Hazel worked as a clerk at Skip's Grocery in Carbondale for many years as well as volunteered at Midland Hospice PACE program for nearly 20 years. She loved to sew, knit, crochet and enjoyed working in her garden. She was an active member of Community Congregational Church in Carbondale and was a member of women's fellowship. Hazel was also actively involved in the Town and Country Jills.
Hazel is survived by her son Charles Miles and his wife Nancy of Topeka, Kansas; one grandchild Dr. Brett C. Miles and his wife Misty of Lee's Summit, MO; two sisters: Nadine Clay of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Grace Bender of Bella Vista, Arkansas; one brother Duane Chick of Whiting, Kansas; and a sister-in-law Dora Chick of Hagerman, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Vern in 1978; two brothers: Lloyd and Donald Chick; and one sister Leona McQueen.
A memorial service will be held at Community United Church of Christ,104 S. Fourth St., Carbondale, KS 66414 on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 11:00AM. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care Hospice House, 200 SW Frazier Cir. Topeka, KS 66606
