Helen W. (Wanda Lee) Baltunas, died January 28, 2013 at Via Christi Village in Manhattan following an extended stay. She was born November 27, 1930 in Jamestown, Kansas, the daughter of John William and Dora Ethel (Clanin) Daily. After graduating from Concordia High School in 1948, Helen moved to Chicago where she lived for a period of time with her brother, Bill and his wife, Margaret. She married Medard Baltunas on January 3, 1949. They lived and worked in the Chicago area until Med's death on February 25, 1986.
Following the death of her beloved husband, Helen returned to Kansas in 1986, moving to Manhattan where her brother, Eugene and his family lived. Helen became employed at Kansas State University and in 1988 she went to work in what was then the freshman and sophomore Department of Environmental Design in the College of Architecture, Planning and Design. She later promoted to the Assistant Dean's Office of CAPD, where she remained until her retirement in 1999.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both died the same week during a visit to her home in Chicago in 1962; two brothers, Bill and Gene, as well as a niece Barbara Day.
She is survived by a nephew, Leon Daily of Cuba, Missouri; two great nieces, Dawn Reid of St. George, Kansas, and Brenda Gonzalez and her husband, Angel of Abilene, Texas; and two great nephews, Shannon Daily of Lawrence, Kansas, and Brandon Daily of Manhattan, Kansas. A number of friends who helped to oversee her care during the past several years are also left to miss her endearingly spunky personality.
Helen was admired for being a fantastic cook, frequently treating her friends and family to some of her culinary delights. She was very creative and artistic which was reflected in the landscaping around her home. With a particular fondness for southwestern décor and art, she created some beautiful paintings and floral arrangements that could be found throughout her home, as well as the homes of friends.
A memorial service will be held at Via Christi Village Chapel, Manhattan, Kansas, on April 25, 2013 at 1:30PM. Cremation will be followed by inurnment in St. Casimir Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois.
