Helen Irene Loewen, 71, Maple Hill, KS, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2007.
Helen is survived by her husband of 53 years, Dick, her three children, Dennis Loewen and wife Gail, Lynn Fast and husband Kevin, Darin Loewen and wife Lisa, her 11 grandchildren, Jesse Loewen and wife Angela, Luke, Jenny, Derek, Courtney, Cody, Brittany, Kylie, Dalton, Ashlyn and Ryn.
Helen, the fifth of seven children, was born on December 9, 1935 in Topeka to Guy and Edna Myers. She attended Enterprise Academy where she met the love of her life, Dick Loewen. They were married September 26, 1954 and moved to Maple Hill to farm. Helen helped with the farm work while she raised her three children. She worked for the Atchison Topeka Employee Benefit Insurance Company, later called Century Health Solutions, for 19 years. Her uncanny ability to make everyone feel special made her an excellent supervisor. For her and Dick, the farm was their first love, so when she retired, they went to work it full time. However, with 11 grandchildren to spoil mercilessly, she didn't have much time to spare.
Helen embraced life and faced each challenge, even cancer, with courage and grace. She loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally and somehow made each one feel like her favorite. We will miss her infectious smile, her unwavering faith in God, her hugs and kisses and, most of all, her unbreakable spirit.
She was a lifelong member of the Wanamaker Seventh Day Adventist Church, a Reach for Recovery volunteer, managed a rest area for the MS-150 bike tour, and a committee member of the Race Against Breast Cancer.
A remembrance of life service will be held Monday, November 12 at 10:00 a.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka. Burial will follow at the Maple Hill Cemetery. Helen will lie in state at the funeral home from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday.
