Helen L. Burd

Helen L. Burd, 88, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at her home. She was born on December 30, 1916 in Osage City, the daughter of Axel and Hilda Hedberg. She graduated from Osage City High School in 1934. She resided in Topeka for over 50 years. She was employed in food service by Highland Park High School and Topeka Public Schools for many years. She was a charter member of Highland Heights Christian Church, held positions in Christian Womens Fellowship and a member of the Artists Association of Topeka. Helen married Robert O. Burd on August 29, 1936 in Osage City. He preceded her in death on August 5, 1967. She was also preceded in death by one son, Wayne D. Burd in 1997,and one sister, Opal Maxwell in 2004. Survivors include her children, Dodie Gibbs and husband, Fred of Gresham, Oregon, Connie Burd of Topeka, Robert E. Burd and wife, Carolyn of Ankeny, Iowa, Keith Burd and wife, Joy of Sparks, Nevada, Deb Burd of Topeka, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. She will lie in state after Noon Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening. Memorial contribuitons may be given to Highland Heights Christian Church, 4803 S.E. 29th St., Tecumseh, Ks. 66542 or the American Diabetes Association, 837 S. Hillside, Wichita, Ks. 67211.
