Helen Louise McClelland-Nichols was born December 30, 1941 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Walter McClelland and Amanda (Pee-Wee) Joyce-Sharp.
Helen spent her entire life in Topeka, Kansas. She attended Topeka Public Schools, culminating with her graduation from Highland Park High School in 1960.
Helen was a life-long member of Mt. Caramel Missionary Baptist Church. Upon uniting with the church in 1962, she was a member of the Young Matrons Club and sung in the church choir.
Helen's favorite hobbies and past-times included being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to showering them with love, attention and quality time; she was also an avid pursuer of leisure activities which included rest and relaxation.
Helen retired from Kansas Neurological Institute in 2001. She was a licensed medical health technician.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Amanda (Pee Wee) Joyce Sharp and Walter (Red) McClelland.
She was married to Harold Nichols and later divorced.
Helen leaves a legacy of memories to three beautiful daughters, Alice C. Thomasson, Angela M. McClelland and Rhonda D. Nichols, all of Topeka. Six brothers, Dan W. McClelland, Wayne J. McClelland, Ronald D. McClelland, Jerome L. Joyce, William T. Joyce (Patricia) and Robert I. McClelland and one sister, Brenda A. Johnson. In addition, cousins whom she considered brothers and sisters, Joyce L. Chambers, Sandra D. Chambers, Sharon Stewart (Thomas), Ethel Elliott, Linda E. Chambers, Leroy S. Chambers, Lynn G. Chambers, Cynthia K. Chambers (deceased) and Robert W. Chambers (deceased), ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Mt. Caramel Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm at the Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel.
