Helen M. Lewis, 92, Topeka, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2012 at a local care center.
Helen was born November 6, 1919, in rural Geary County the daughter of William and Elizabeth (MacArthur) Horne. She graduated from Alta Vista High School in 1937.
As a young woman she worked as a dietary aide at Security Benefit Hospital. During WWII she worked at the Hercules Powder Company in Eudora packing gun powder. She later was employed as a receptionist at Christopher Photography Studio, retiring in 1981.
She was a former member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.
Helen married Claude W. Lewis on June 3, 1945 in St. Joseph, MI. He died August 19, 1992. Survivors include daughters, Gloria (Mark) Desch, Stillwater, MN, Barbara (Thomas) Rush, Topeka: step-daughter, Romona Snodgrass, Rozel; grandchildren, Eric Rush, Heather Brashear, Nicole Gillson, Ryan Desch, Amy Hacker; four great grandchildren; sisters, Hazel Smith, Overbrook, Clara Pennington, Tucson, AZ; and twelve step-grandchildren and their families. She was also preceded in death by a brother, William Ernest Horne; sisters, Alice Florence, Gladys Davis; step-daughter, Wilma Gravel; and granddaughter, Kathryn Rush.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Lewis will lie in state at the funeral home after 2:00 p.m. on Monday, and visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
