Helen Marie Balman, 84 of Topeka, died Saturday, December 77, 2002 at a Topeka nursing facility.
She was born February 1, 1918 in Mountain Grove, MO., the daughter of Dennis T. and Daisy Roam Sanders. She attended grade school in Beloit, KS and high school in Neosho, MO. She married Delbert Balman on May 16, 1936. During WWII Helen worked as a welder in the shipyards in Oakland, CA.
She and her husband owned and operated a furniture store in Leavenworth, KS for many years before moving to Anaheim, CA. While in Anaheim CA, Helen owned and operated a book store until she reitred. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985 and her brother, Ray Sanders in 1996.
Helen moved to Topeka in 1986. She is survived by a niece, Barbara Schonherr of Nokesville, VA, 2 great nieces, a great nephew, a step-niece, Pat Boggs of Topeka, a step-great niece and 2 step great-nephews.
Helen had no children, but was a devoted animal lover and her animals were her children. She especially loved dogs, but also liked cats, birds, and even wild animals including squirrels, racoons and possums. All the neighborhood animals seemed to know they could always come to Helen's patio and find plenty to eat.
Graveside services will be at 2 PM Thursday, December 12, 2002 at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Helping Hands Humane Society, the Cat Association of Topeka, or the Arthritis Foundation.
