He later attended Cowley County Community College, in Arkansas City; Then attended University of Kansas, and later graduated from Emporia State University . He completed his graduate studies at the University of Oklahoma in 1968, and was recognized as the outstanding graduate student in the Department of History. He began teaching at Baker University in Baldwin City, KS in 1968. He retired from there in 1996, as Emeritus Professor of History .
He was married to Dolores Hess and later divorced. He then married Nancy Wakefield in December 1978; she survives.
