Ida Maxine Craig, 91, formerly of Topeka, passed away Monday, February 13, 2012 at the Life Care Center of Burlington, KS. Maxine was born June 15, 1920 in Nortonville, KS to Richard and Agnes (Sloop) Lindsay. She graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Kansas City, MO and served in the Army Nurse Corps in Australia during WWII. She lived most of her life in Topeka, worked as an office nurse for Dr. Don Pfutze, and eight years as Superintendent of Nursing at Santa Fe Hospital.
She married John F. Swalwell in 1947. He died in 1953. She married James M. Craig in 1962 and he preceded her in death in 1998. Her twin brothers John and George Lindsay; sister, Vera Rosser; step-daughter, Ruthann Ketron, and grandson, Casey Craig also preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Kay Swalwell Scott (Bill); son, Arthur R. Swalwell (Karen); stepsons, Dennis Craig (Wanda), Steve Craig (Kay); 12 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. A family graveside service will be held Saturday, February 18th at Rochester Cemetery in Topeka. Friends and family are invited to a gathering from 3:00 to 5:00 pm Saturday, February 18th at Martin Creek Place community room, 4950 SW Huntoon, to celebrate her life. Eulogy will be at 4:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Topeka Public Library, 1515 SW 10th St., Topeka, KS 66604.
