Irene Johnson, 99, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2007. She will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. today with a family visitation from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker, Topeka. A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2007, at Faith Lutheran Church, 1716 SW Gage Blvd. Burial will precede the memorial service at 9:45 a.m. at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 6th and Gage. Irene was born in Ellsworth, KS, the daughter of Otto and Margaretha Grosnick Schulz. She lived in Topeka from 1936-2004. She taught in the Lutheran schools in Alma and Topeka, and she was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Topeka. She was a Sunday School teacher and a Girl Scout leader. Irene married Clarence Johnson on November 23, 1935, in Colorado Springs. He died in 1983. Survivors include son, Larry Johnson and wife, Joan, of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Marlene Markley and husband Walter, of Derby, KS; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
