Irene V. Hoffsommer

Irene V. Hoffsommer, 99, of Overbrook, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at Brookside Manor in Overbrook. She was born on June 26, 1910 near Berryton, the daughter of Oscar V. and Nita Eberhart Roller. Irene graduated from Berryton High School. She was employed by the Santa Fe Hospital Association for four years. She was a homemaker for most of her life. She was a member of Grace E.U.B. Church and later Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church where she was the pianist for both churches for over 50 years. Irene married Paul K. Hoffsommer on February 24, 1934. They shared over 71 years of marriage, much of it in the Lake Shawnee area. He preceded her in death on October 30, 2005. Survivors include two sons, Dean Hoffsommer and his wife, Addie of Overbrook, Gary Hoffsommer and his wife, Karen of rural Overbrook, six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Topeka Cemetery. Irene will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church, 6020 S.E. 44th St., Tecumseh, KS 66542 or to Midland Care Hospice Services, 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606 or to the organization of the donor's choice.
