Mario 'Marty' Carreno of Emporia passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2015 after a long battle with Cystic Fibrosis. He was 65 years old. He was born in Topeka on April 12, 1950. He served in the Navy and was a journeyman electrician. He was preceded in death by his parents David and Peggy Carreno of Topeka and his younger sister Jessica Carreno who also died of Cystic Fibrosis; and foster brother, Officer Tony Patterson.
He is survived by his partner Rod Estes of Emporia; his son Dominic Carreno and his wife, Misty Carreno; five grandchildren-Rainin Carreno, Blaze Carreno, Alexys Ely, Tristyn Lloyd, and Davyn Carreno; four brothers-Raymond Carreno, Thomas Carreno, Byron Carreno and Randy Carreno; two sisters-Theresa Hall and Margaret Carreno; and three foster brothers-Norman Patterson, Ricky Patterson and Gary Patterson; all from the Topeka area.
In addition to working as a Journeyman electrician, Mario managed restaurants, owned a Sonic, and worked for Sacs Fifth Avenue in Phoenix, AZ where he oversaw the relocation of the entire store to a larger building.
He loved to travel—visiting new places and trying new cuisines. Mario placed a lot of value on family and strived to stay in touch with all his relatives as his health permitted. He adored his grandchildren and tried to attend all of their school functions and extra-curricular activities.
A celebration of his life will be held at noon on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. The family will receive friends at the chapel one hour prior to the service. Private family inurnment will be at a later date.
