Jack Vaughn

Marvin "Jack" Vaughn, 85, Topeka, passed away on September 27, 2017 peacefully at home.
Jack was born May 6, 1932 in Hominy, Oklahoma, the son of Gilbert and Lula Vaughn. Jack spent his early youth in Oklahoma City. At age 14, the family moved to a farm near Benedict, Kansas where he attended Benedict High School. While there, Jack participated in basketball, track and baseball. Jack was the President of his Student Council. Jack graduated in 1950.
Jack enlisted in the United States Navy in March of 1951 and served during the Korean War for 4 years. He served aboard U.S.S. Princeton aircraft carrier and was on a flight crew member on a Grumman AF-2W Guardians in the Sea Control Squadron as a radar operator searching for enemy submarines. Jack re-enlisted as an Ensign in the United States Naval Reserve where he served for 2 additional years from 1960 - 1962.
Jack graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree. Jack remained a very loyal follower of his Wildcats and enjoyed watching the football and basketball teams in both good and bad times.
Jack was employed at Boeing, SW Bell, and retired from IBM in sales after 25 years.
Jack was a member of the Sunrise Optimist Club, First United Methodist Church, and the Combat Air Museum.
Jack's favorite activities included spending time with his children and grandchildren, flying a powered hang glider, running the flight simulator at the Combat Air Museum, talking politics, and taking an active role in his men's group.
Jack and Carlene (Burdick) were married in Wellington, Kansas on August 5, 1961. Jack is survived by his wife of 58 years; son, Richard (Nancy) Vaughn; daughter, Jennifer (Eric) Vaughn Barner; grandchildren, Lauren and Garrett Vaughn, Jessica, Stephanie, Evan and Nicholas Barner, all of Overland Park, Kansas; and sister, Patricia Howell. He was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine Rutherford.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 2, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church, Klasse Chapel, 600 SW Topeka Blvd. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A reception will immediately follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to be made to the Topeka Combat Air Museum, 7016 SE Forbes Avenue Topeka, KS 66619.
