James Marshall Brown, 74, of Topeka, KS, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at the Midland Hospice House. He was born December 11, 1938, in Topeka, KS, to Marion Arthur Brown and Mabel Esther (Copland) Brown.
Jim graduated from Topeka High School. Jim completed his apprenticeship training, and in 1958, he joined the local Pipefitters Union #165, where he remained a member until death.
Jim married Sandra Jane Linnenburger on July 13, 1957, in Sutter, IL, enjoying 55 years of marriage. He was a Residential Builder, building several single family houses in Topeka. Jim worked for US Engineering before establishing Piping Contractors of Kansas. He built the company engaging in industrial, commercial and mechanical construction employing at times over 100 people, before retiring in 2000.
He was on the Brewster Place Board of Directors from 2001 – 2010. Jim was a past President of Mechanical Contractors Association of Kansas and Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association. He was on the City Planning Commission and he was the Building Consultant for the USD 345 Freshman Center expansion.
He enjoyed working, hunting and fishing on his Wabaunsee County farm. Jim was a member of First Congregational Church and served on many other local boards. He was a member of Golden Rule Masonic Lodge # 90 A.F. & A.M. (50 Years), Scottish Rite Valley of Topeka, Arab Shrine and Southwest Rotary. Jim and Sandra enjoyed many years of vacationing and international travel.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Marion Eugene Brown, and his parents.
Jim and Sandra had two children, Pamela Sue (Kyle) Ferlemann and Steven James (Connie) Brown. He enjoyed his three grandchildren, Emily Leigh Ferlemann, Abbey Nichole Brown and Anthony James "AJ" Brown. Jim is also survived by a sister, Kay (Dean) Brown Morton.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 28, 2013, at First Congregational Church, Topeka. Inurnment will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2013, at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, Topeka.
