Topeka

James Alphonso Cantrell, affectionately known as Jimmie, passed away on January 10, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 85. Born on May 27, 1939, in Miami, Oklahoma, Jimmie lived a life marked by warmth, compassion, and a deep love for his family.

A dedicated professional, Jimmie worked for the State of Kansas for an impressive 37 years. His commitment to public service was paralleled by his honorable military service in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1963, where he was stationed in Topeka Kansas and remained close to his roots.

Jimmie's passion for education led him to graduate from Washburn University in 1964 with a degree in Business. He applied the principles of his education throughout his career and personal life, always striving to provide for his loved ones. He was particularly proud of being part of the Quapaw Tribe, embodying a deep connection to his heritage.

On September 17, 1960, Jimmie met the love of his life, Yvonne May Cantrell, while at a dance in Topeka. Their marriage spanned 45 wonderful years, during which they created countless memories together. Jimmie cherished the time spent with family, particularly during Christmas and Thanksgiving, which were celebrated with joy and togetherness.

He is survived by his son, Daron Kevin Cantrell; his brothers, Tommy (Freda) Cantrell and Norman (Ginger) Cantrell; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who hold treasured memories of their time with him.

Jimmie also leaves behind a legacy of resilience as a proud 20-year cancer survivor, showcasing his strength in the face of life's challenges. He enjoyed hobbies that brought him joy, such as hunting, fishing, watching sports—particularly Oklahoma football—and an enduring love for reading and cars.

James will forever be remembered for his warm and loving spirit, which touched the lives of many. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Yvonne; his sister, Connie Sue Haugan; his brothers, Watie Gene Sixkiller, Harvey Ed Sixkiller; his parents, Eurban and Shirley Cantrell; his stepfather, Watie Sixkiller; and his stepmother, Dolly Thompson.

As we remember Jimmie, we celebrate a life well-lived, one filled with love, perseverance, and a commitment to family and community. His presence will be deeply missed yet fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
