James D. Henderson

August 19, 1929 — November 27, 2012

James David Henderson, 83, of Topeka passed away peacefully on Nov. 27, 2012, at his home in Topeka.

A 2 p.m. memorial service will be at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka, Ks., on Sat., Dec. 1, 2012.

Jim, born on Aug. 19, 1929, was the only child of Grace and Herb Henderson of Kansas City, Mo. He graduated in 1946 from Joplin (Mo.) High School and attended the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. Jim married Julia C. Russell of Joplin, Mo., on Sept. 30, 1949. They moved to Topeka later that year.
In his early career, Jim sold HVAC units for residential and commercial customers. Seeing a need for suburban-property development for Topeka businesses, Jim began pursuing commercial real estate development, which soon became a full-time occupation. His major developments in Topeka were Highland Crest Shopping Center in the late 1950s, retail properties in East Topeka and I-70 Commercial Park at 10th and Wanamaker starting in the 1960s and continuing on to the present day. He was also involved early on with site selections for Pizza Hut in Topeka and Mexico.

Jim's passions were fast cars and exotic travel. He visited Europe, Asia, South and Central America, the Middle East, Australia, Canada, Mexico and all 50 states.

Jim is survived by his wife Elizabeth; three children, Jennifer Henderson (George M. Eberhart) of Chicago, Il., Jill Jepson (Barry) of Harveyville, and Jaime Henderson (Carolyn) of Topeka; his eight grandchildren, Beau, Laurel, Kristi, Natalie, Kerri, Alex, Catherine and Katie; five nieces and one nephew; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his ex-wife Julia.

Memorial contributions may be made to Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, Ks. 66604.
