James E. Gubanyi

James E. Gubanyi, 65, Topeka, died August 15, 2010. He was born in Leavenworth, KS, December 24, 1944, son of Emery James Gubanyi and Naomi Nibbelink (Nieman). Jim lived in California until he was 15 at which time he moved to Kansas with his mother and brother. He is a graduate of Topeka High School. He was a professional driver for many years. Most recently, he loved being a school bus driver for Topeka Lutheran School and was honored to serve as church custodian at St. John Lutheran Church in Topeka where he had been a faithful member for many years. Jim was an active member of the Kansas Herpetological Society and his contributions to the organization will be missed. He was an avid table tennis player and loved playing softball, playing on three teams at the time of his death. His unique personality and passion and energy for life will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include his daughter, Marla Gubanyi, Topeka; two grandsons, Julian Gubanyi, Topeka, and Jackson Sprecker, Salina; his mother, Naomi Nibbelink, Topeka; his brother, Joe Gubanyi, Seward, NE. A memorial service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church in Topeka at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18. Jim will be inurned in the Lutheran section at Topeka Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Jim's name to either St. John Lutheran Church Eagle Foundation or Kansas Herpetological Society.
