James F. Edwards

James Floyd Edwards was born in Lebo, Kansas on March 23, 1912, the son of Robert and Beatrice (Courtner) Edwards. He passed away on December 20, 2010 in Topeka Kansas, and was a resident of Emporia. In his youth he went to school in Lebo and played football there, and eventually earned a Masters degree from KSTC at Pittsburg. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1941 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, serving honorably in World War II.

Jim was married to Margaret Ellen Hamman on October 3, 1937, at Hartford, Kansas, and taught at various schools in Bluff City, Cedar Vale, and at ElDorado High School. Later in his career he taught at Butler County Community College. In the mid-50's, Jim started his own business, Edwards Electronics, in ElDorado, and with Margaret raised a family. Margaret and Jim divorced in 1967, and some years later Jim later married Katherine (Griffith) Henry.

Jim Edwards overcame many adversities in his life, and was a survivor. In later years, Jim wrote, "Age is a question of mind over matter", and he persevered long after most others of his age had given up. He could be seen walking the streets of Emporia day after day, and was stronger and healthier than men half his age. Jim and his older sister, Lorene Bethurem, took care of each other in later years, providing mutual support into old age. Jim intended to live longer than Lorene so he could take care of her, and he accomplished that. Lorene passed away earlier in 2010. Jim Edwards was a good and decent man with no vices, who always did his best. He was also a very private man, but he loved his family to the end; and they, him.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral services. Charitable donations may be made to the Stormont-Vail Foundation, Memorial Center, 1500 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604.

Jim Edwards is survived by son William N. Edwards and wife Bernice, of Ozark, Missouri; son Thomas A. Edwards and wife Cathy of Lakeland, Florida; son Richard A. Edwards and wife Paula of Halstead; son John N. Edwards and wife Kathy of Wichita; nephew Robert Edwards of Emporia; niece Susan Hammerle of Wichita; niece Joan Kelley of Overland Park; and nephew Charles E. Ott of Wichita.
