James B. (Jim) Hungerford, 79 of Topeka, passed away on October 2nd at the Midland Hospice House after a brave, long battle against COPD.
He was born April 1st, 1928 in Hutchinson. He was a lifelong Kansan, residing in Topeka the majority of his life. He served in the US Navy during WWII on the Carrier USS Valley Forge. He retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1986 with 35 years of service. His passions were his family, his church, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife Harlene, daughters: Myrna Baych (Richard), Palma Hernandez, Anni Byrd, Jayme Clevenger (Randy), Lisa Cook (Aaron) and step-daughter Shannon Martinez (John). He was a special PaPa to Brad (Lisa) Baych, Iris Hernandez, Shane, Adam, & Andrew Byrd, Kylee (Charlie) Woods, Emily Hartwell, Jordan & Ashley Cook, Nigel, Amanda, & Bryan Martinez. He was a proud great grandparent of 8.
Jim was cremated. We will celebrate him with a service at Susanna Wesley United Methodist 7433 SW 29th on Saturday, October 6th at 10:00am. Burial will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
