James J. Hartman

James J. Hartman, 78, of Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at his home. He was born on September 25, 1929 in Topeka, the son of Joseph L. and Regina C. Mauer Hartman. He was a life-long Topeka resident. James attended Hayden High School. He was a Marine Corps veteran, serving from September of 1948 through November of 1955. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He then transferred into the Kansas Army National Guard, serving from 1956 through 1989. He was employed as a carpenter by the Kansas Army National Guard. He was a member of Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion and Philip Billard Post No. 1650, V.F.W. James married Wanda I. Russell on December 28, 1964 in Miami, OK. She survives. Other survivors include one sister, Margaret Stattleman and three brothers, Richard Hartman, Donald Hartman and Lawrence "Larry" Hartman all of Topeka. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert J. Hartman. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery where military honors will be presented by a burial detail from Fort Riley, KS. Burial will follow. James will not lie in state. Memorial contributions may be given to American Legion Capitol Post No. 1, 3800 S.E. Michigan Ave., Topeka, KS 66605. Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
