James Melvin Thompson, 70, of Berryton, died June 30, 2009 at Stormont-Vail Health Center.
Jim was born July 6, 1938, in Buhl, Idaho to Wilmer W. Thompson and Alma Loretha (Sparks) Thompson.
He spent his early childhood in Idaho before the family returned to their home state of North Carolina. Jim graduated from Elkin High School in 1956 and then went on to graduate from welding school in Nashville, TN.
He began his lifelong career as a welder upon graduation and worked throughout the U.S. as an Iron Worker, settling in Kansas in the early 1960's. Jim worked for the Iron Workers Local #10 for 29 years, retiring in 1988. He later worked for another 10 years as a welder for Shawnee County, retiring in 2000.
Jim served in the U.S. Army as a welder from 1961-1963 with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, seeing duty in Germany along the Berlin Wall.
Jim enjoyed the outdoors, particularly hunting, fishing, and "riding the roads" with his dog in the back of the truck.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra of 36 years, one son, Jason of Indianapolis, IN, and a step daughter, Angie Campbell of El Dorado, KS. Also surviving is his mother, two brothers, John (Louise) Thompson and Kenneth (Ann) Thompson and two sisters, Audrey (Revis) Thompson and Jennifer (Bob) Trivette. All reside in North Carolina.
Jim will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Mon., July 6 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel with visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Inurnment will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wed., July 8 in Delphos Cemetery, Delphos, KS with Military Honors conducted by Ft. Riley Casualty.
