James C. "Sonny" Powell, 85, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2019.
He was born April 12, 1934, in Chanute, Kansas, the son of Cecil and Ivah (Shephard) Powell.
James graduated from Chanute High School. He served in the United States Navy, United States Air Force and retired from the United States Army.
James married Beverley Dannelley on February 27, 1952 in Valparaiso, Indiana. He was employed by the General Electric for five years in Chicago and the American Forces Exchange Service approximately six years prior to his second retirement.
James was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. James enjoyed fishing, wood working and working on cars.
Survivors include his wife, Beverley Powell; a daughter, Kristie (Jim) Caldwell of Topeka, KS; five sisters, Zita Shoemaker, Virginia Hart, Betty Van Meter, Sue Phillips and Pam Swigert; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren and a very special cousin, Warren Dale (Wren) Samuel of Topeka, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Patti Hinkle and Norma Wells; a brother, Dale Powell; his daughters, Marla Powell and Elaine Holmes and a son, David Powell.
Honoring James request, cremation is planned. No services are planned at this time.
