James Otto Stutz, 89, died on January 20, 2013, at St Francis Health Center in Topeka, Kansas. He was born February 1, 1923, in Manhattan, New York, the son of Otto & Heddy Stutz. He was a highly skilled and talented jeweler/model maker and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey and later moved to St. Gallen, Switzerland with his family where he was a member of the Swiss Army and learned the jewelry trade under an apprenticeship. When he came back to the United States he married Trudy Stutz on 1/10/1953. She preceded him in death on 1/23/2001. James designed and created original pieces for Tiffany's & Harry Winston Jewelers in Manhattan, New York and later became self-employed.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brevard, NC. He enjoyed skiing, golf, mountain climbing with his dad, gardening swimming and of course, walking the beautiful mountains of North Carolina.
Survivors include his children, Jim Stutz of Chesapeake, Virginia; Greg Stutz of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Carol Gitto of Topeka, Kansas; Nick Gitto, son-in-law; Elisabeth Stutz, daughter-in-law; and four grandchildren Christina, Nicholas, Jimmy Jr. & Gregory II.
Funeral services were held at the Moore Funeral Home in Brevard, NC on February 1, 2013.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St Francis Health Center Foundation, 1700 SW 7th Street, Topeka, KS 66606 in memory of James Stutz, which will be earmarked for senior services.
The family is so grateful to the St Francis physicians and caregivers for the compassionate care provided to James during his illness and final days.
