Jane K. Frey, 93, Topeka, entered eternal life on August 3, 2008.
She was born July 19, 1915 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Charles E. and Alma (Vanderveer) Keefer. She attended Lincoln Public Schools and earned a B.A. degree in English from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1937. As a student, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Chi Delta Phi, and was elected to Mortar Board. After graduation, she taught high school English, Latin and Journalism until her marriage.
On August 25, 1940 she married George J. Frey in Lincoln. They moved to Topeka in 1942.
Jane was a homemaker. In addition, she was a charter member of Chapter FI of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, which she served in various capacities, including president. She was also past president of the Topeka Branch of the American Pen Women and was an alumna of Tri Delta Sorority. She was a 61 year member of First United Methodist Church, participating in several of its activities and ministries.
She was a writer of children's poetry and song lyrics. Her poems and song lyrics, which were set to music by her sister, Frances Atkinson, were published in Ranger Rick, Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill, Wee Wisdom, The Instructor, and the former Children's Activities, now known as Highlights for Children.
Jane was predeceased by her husband in 1979; her parents and her sister, Frances Keefer Atkinson of Denver. Survivors include two daughters: Janet (Larry) Dixon of Topeka and Judith A. Frey of Boulder, CO; two granddaughters: Susan Dixon (Bryan) Sibrian of Austin, TX, and Kara Dixon (Anthony) Swartzendruber of Wichita; great-grandson, Isaac Swartzendruber of Wichita; one niece and one nephew.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 8, 2008 at Wesley Hall at Aldersgate Village. Private family burial will take place in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska. Jane will lie in state from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road with visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
