Janet Mae (Lewis) Kerschner, 82, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017.
She was born November 9, 1934, in Tiffin, Ohio, the daughter of Dale Lewis and Emma (Brause) Lewis. Janet was raised on a farm in Tiffin, Ohio. She was a graduate of Columbian High School, the class of 1952, Tiffin, Ohio. Janet attended the University of Rhode Island, Wakefield, Rhode Island, where she studied Home Economics and English. She transferred to Bowling Green University, Bowling Green, Ohio, to complete her studies in those fields.
Janet married Duane Kerschner on January 8, 1959, in Topeka, Kansas. Duane made a career with the United States Air Force. This of course took their family on assignments across the USA. They were stationed at Forbes Air Force Base, Topeka, more than once and when it came time for Duane to retire, they chose to remain in Topeka.
Throughout the years Janet worked with and for many people with developmental disabilities. In the early years of TARC (Topeka Association for Retarded Citizens) Janet was a volunteer. She worked many years for Sheltered Living, Inc. in Topeka. In 1993, Janet made the move to work for TARC, serving in many rewarding positions until her retirement in 2006, due to health reasons.
Janet also had a deep faith in God that sustained her throughout her life and as she raised her family, especially in those times when she was alone with her daughters while Duane was deployed away from home. Janet was always involved in her local church. She loved to cook and bake and was an avid bridge player and community volunteer.
Janet is survived by her husband, Duane Kerschner; three daughters, Paula Kerschner, Jana Kerschner, and Karla Kerschner-Haag; son-in-law, Ernie Haag; and granddaughter, Jayden Haag, all of Topeka; and two brothers, Dale Lewis of Tiffin, Ohio, and Donald Lewis of Mount Dora, Florida.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Dale F. Lewis and Emma (Brausse) Lewis; brother, Ralph Lewis; and three sisters, Faith Crabtree, Mary Seiler, and Ruth Kohlenberg.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene, 3501 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka, Kansas 66614.
