Janet Claire Metz, 83, of Topeka, passed away on February 21, 2021.
She was born October 13, 1937 to Joseph and Ethel Morton. She graduated from Topeka High and St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing and attended Emporia State University and Ottawa University.
Janet taught psychiatric nursing at Topeka State Hospital and later worked as the Program RN for Children's and Adolescent Services, Topeka State Hospital. She retired after 30 years and volunteered at St. Francis Hospital. She began working part-time with The Toy Store, loving it for 18 years.
She married Capt. Richard Sasek, USMC, and from this union had a son, Michael Sasek and a daughter, Michele Sasek Walters. Capt. Sasek was killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.
Janet married Alvin Metz in 1969. Together they started the Long Branch Restaurant and welcomed Jerry Metz and Danny Metz into the home and business.
Janet belonged to the First Presbyterian Church, Topeka High School Historical Association, St. Luke's School of Nursing Alumni, Active Prime Timers, and volunteered at church, St. Francis Hospital, and Let's Help. She served on the board of Metz Enterprises.
Survivors include her children, Michael Sasek (Lory), Centreville, VA; Michele Walters (Rick), Salina, KS; Danny Metz (Chereene), Lakewood Ranch, FL; Jerry Metz (Debbie), Branson, MO; five grandchildren, Emily Sullivan, Katie Sasek, Jillian Sasek, Richard Walters, and Dr. Ashley Aumiller; a new great granddaughter, Mara Sullivan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin Metz on June 26, 2020; and her sisters, Marjean Landon and Shirley Morton.
Honoring Janet's request, cremation has take place. A graveside memorial service will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th St., Topeka, KS 66604 at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 23, 2021.
