Janet M. Mitchell, 73, of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at a Topeka hospital. She was born May 6, 1951 in Topeka, the daughter of Thomas and Delores (Hunt) West.

Janet graduated from Highland Park High School and earned a Master's Degree in Elementary Counseling from the University of Kansas. She was employed by U.S.D 501, including Robinson Middle School and Eisenhower Middle School before retiring. She was an active member of the Republican Party and the Wanamaker Road Baptist Church.

Janet married Douglas McAdams. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Nancy West-Lister.

Survivors include two sons, Josh Mitchell of Topeka, Kansas and Travis Mitchell (Violeta) of Waldorf, Maryland, one granddaughter, Olivia, and her siblings, Suzanne (Rodney) Nelson of Topeka, and Thomas (Kim) West of Topeka.

Near the end of her life, Janet was able to reunite with her biological son, Marc Urban, and they formed a loving, lasting relationship.

A Celebration of Janet's Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2024 at the Wanamaker Road Baptist Church where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Wanamaker Road Baptist Church, 2700 SW Wanamaker Rd., Topeka, Kansas 66614.

Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. is assisting the family with service arrangements.
