Janet R. Nuzman

Janet Ruth Nuzman, 82, of Silver Lake, Kansas, passed away August 27, 2014. She was born in Nebraska City, Nebraska on October 23, 1931 to George H. and Mildred (Jordan) Steck. Janet graduated from Topeka High School in 1949, Kansas State University in Physical Education in 1953 and later obtained her Master's degree from KU in 1967.

She married Carl E. Nuzman on August 23, 1952 at First Methodist Church in Topeka. She followed him in the US Air Force for 3 years and they returned to Topeka in 1956. She began her teaching career as a physical education substitute teacher at Topeka High in 1957, then taught at Highland Park 1957-'61, one year at Seaman High '61-'62, followed by Washburn University where Janet retired as an assistant Professor of Physical Education Emeriti having taught for 33 years.

Jan's accomplishments at Washburn U. include: development and organization of the women's intercollegiate athletic program; she was the first head coach in gymnastics, field hockey, basketball, softball and volleyball. Jan also served as women's athletic coordinator and Washburn representative to the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. Jan studied European physical education at the University of Oslo, Norway the summer of 1971 which started her interest in foreign travel. She and her husband have visited most European countries including Finland and Russia, and the highlight of their travels was around the world in 45 days in 2007!
She was a trustee for the Washburn Endowment Assoc. from 2001-2004 serving on the Finance Committee. Janet was inducted into the Washburn Athletic Hall of Fame in October of 1988 and Highland Park Teachers Hall of Fame in 1995.

Janet's past and present Washburn/community service includes: service on the Athletic Committee, Catalog Revision Committee, Capital Campaign Fund Athletic Committee, Library Committee, Academic Policy Committee, Georgia Neese Gray Distinguished Women's Lecture Series, Zonta Club of Topeka, Delta Theta Chi Sorority, Heartland Branch Huntington's Disease Foundation and Shawnee Girl Scout Jamboree instructor.

She is survived by her husband Carl, her brother Louis J. Steck (Barbara) of Fresno, CA, her sister Georgia Montana of Stickney, IL and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at First United Methodist Church Chapel at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Janet Nuzman Memorial Fund at First United Methodist Church, 600 SW Topeka Blvd. Topeka, KS 66603 or the Janet Nuzman Athletic Scholarship in care of the Washburn University Foundation, 1729 SW MacVicar Ave. Topeka, KS 66604.

Graveside inurnment service will be held October 11, 2014 at 10:30 a.m.
at Prairie Home Cemtery at 35th and Menoken Rd., Topeka, KS
