Janice Rae Guthrie

December 12, 1948 — June 13, 2017

Janice Rae Guthrie, was born on December 12, 1948 in Stockton, California, to Lawrence Raymond Paulo, Sr. and Inamay Myrtle Grannas. She passed away on June 13, 2017 at her home in Topeka.

She lived most of her life in Stockton, except for brief stints in Altoona, Pennsylvania, her mother's hometown, and both Rochester and Palatine Bridge, New York after high school. In 2006, she moved to Burlingame, Kansas, where she lived for three years, followed by Scranton, Kansas for about five years, and ultimately Topeka, where she spent the last couple of years at Rose Hill Place.

Janice graduated from Edison High School in Stockton in 1966, where she had been an active participant in choir. After graduation, she moved to upstate New York, where she worked at Fanny Farmer Candy. Her husband Steve would joke that they hired Janice because she was a Type I diabetic who hated chocolate, so they didn't have to worry that she would eat up their profits.
Upon her return to Stockton, she worked for a garbage collection company for 12 years, a meat company for 6 months, and then finally found her niche in the Car Dealership Insurance Industry in 1984. She worked at two different companies until 2006, when her daughter Amanda, somehow convinced Janice to make the move to Kansas.

Upon her arrival in Kansas, Janice bought a camper, and enjoyed several years of camping with her family at Pomona lake, until her body finally didn't allow her to enjoy the camper anymore, which was only a couple of years ago. Janice loved reading books, especially mysteries. Her eyesight had started to deteriorate, so there was a time period where she couldn't read books very well unless they were large print. She was excited when her daughter bought her a tablet one year for Christmas, because she could adjust the font size on the tablet and was able to start reading books again. Over the last year, she got into The Cat Who series, and every time her family came over, she would talk about what new adventures those characters had got into. In her younger years, Janice also enjoyed crocheting, and made many blankets for her family.
At the end of 1969, Janice met a fellow resident of the apartments that she lived in at a party. On January 31, 1970, she married Steve Lee Guthrie. On August 12, 1970, she gave birth to a stillborn baby, whom they named Louis Terrell Guthrie, after Steve's late father. On May 30, 1981, she gave birth to a daughter, whom they named Amanda Melissa Guthrie.

Janice was an extremely unselfish woman, who helped out many of her family members. She gave unselfishly and loved the holidays when she could go out and shop for all the children in the family. When Amanda was in school, and would get a fundraiser form for one thing or another, Janice would always take it to work and somehow get most of her co-workers to buy things. Amanda was always one of the top sellers in her class, thanks to Janice. She was an extremely hard working woman, who never let her medical diagnoses get in the way of living her life.

She will be missed beyond words by her daughter Amanda Bare, son-in-law (who she treated as her own son) Eric Bare, and the light of her life, her granddaughter Mara Bare, all of Topeka. Janice will also be missed by her sister Pam and her husband Corky Green of Scranton, Kansas. She has two surviving brother-in-laws, Gary and Dale Guthrie, and many nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Steve, her sister Karen Paulo, brother Lawrence "Ray" Paulo, and son Louis Terrell Guthrie. She will also be missed by her fur-grandbaby Buddy, who would be beside himself when he saw Janice walk up the sidewalk, because he knew that she had food in her purse and Janice was a sucker for sharing.

The family will be holding a memorial service on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 1:00 p.m., with a visitation beginning at 12:00 p.m., at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service, 4020 SW 6th Ave., Topeka. She will be buried with her husband at a later date at Park View Cemetery in Manteca, California.
