Jason Phelps

Jason "Jay" Phelps, 78, of Topeka, passed away on Monday, September 27, 2021. He was born April 10, 1943 in San Angelo, Texas, the son of Everett J. and Irene (Bliznak) Phelps.

Jay graduated from Paschal High School in 1962 at Fort Worth, Texas. He was an Air Force Veteran, serving from 1962 -1966. Jay graduated from Don Martin School of Radio and Television in Hollywood, California. He earned a BA Degree in Criminal Justice from Washburn University in 1978. He was employed as a Radio and Television Announcer for WIBW. He later went to work for Washburn University as an Audio Visual Coordinator for 28 years before retiring in 2007.

Jay was a Sunday School Teacher as a teenager at First Baptist Church of Fort Worth, Texas. After moving to Topeka, he became a member of South Knollwood Baptist Church and later became an active member of East Side Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for many years, an AWANA Leader, was a Sunday School Teacher and a Song Leader, Youth Leader, a member of the Choir and participated in plays and church productions.

Jay married Yolanda "Lana" Saldana on November 6, 1964 in Wichita Falls, Texas. She survives. Other survivors include children, Chris (Helen) Phelps of Topeka, Tim (Katie) Phelps of Overland Park, Kansas, five grandchildren, Zach, Sophia, Michael, Joshua and Melanie, and his brother, Floyd Phelps of Mesquite, Texas.

Jay was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey Phelps and two brothers, Pat and Phil.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2021 at the East Side Baptist Church where the family will receive friends for viewing one hour prior to service time. Cremation will follow the service and private inurnment will take place at a later date in Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to East Side Baptist Church, 4425 SE 29th St., Topeka, Kansas 66605.

Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. is assisting the family with arrangements.
