Jean "Carlene" Sutton, 86, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2021. She was born March 6, 1935 on a farm outside of Dill City, Oklahoma, the daughter of Carl P. and Audrey B. (Pyron) Word.
Carlene grew up in Bradley, Oklahoma, then moved to Alec, Oklahoma where she graduated from high school in 1952. Following high school, she moved to Chickasha, Oklahoma where she began working for Southwestern Bell. She put in for a transfer to Wichita, Kansas in 1955. There she met Dale Sutton and they were engaged to be married after a short courtship. They married on October 14, 1956 in Topeka. He preceded her in death.
Carlene was a homemaker from 1959 until her passing. She truly loved watching KU Jayhawks Basketball and Kansas City Royals Baseball. Carlene enjoyed playing Bridge, entertaining, cooking and being a loving mother and grandmother. All family was very important to her.
Survivors include three children, Greg D. Sutton, Brent A. (Betsy) Sutton and Sandra J. (Ronald) Pittman, five grandchildren, Sarah, Kris, Jacob, Brenden, Lucrecia, 2 great-grandchildren, Carson, Adalynn and her brothers, Bobby Word, Perry Word and Roger Word.
Carlene was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Gary D. Word.
A Celebration of Carlene's Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at Mount Hope Cemetery and Funeral Chapel. Inurnment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Town and Country Christian Church, 4925 SW 29th St., Topeka, Kansas 66614.
