Jean Yvonne Smith

June 17, 1935 — April 26, 2015

Jean Yvonne "Boots" Smith was born in Colorado Springs, CO, on June 17, 1935, and passed into the peace of God's love on April 26, 2015, in Topeka, KS. She grew up on a cattle ranch at Lake George, CO, high in the Rockies where she cherished her horse Patches and herded cows as her dad's top hand. "Boots" loved country western music, country dancing, and the mountains.

Known as Yvonne in the work world, she worked as a teletype operator in newspapers in Colorado, Alaska, and California. Her work of the heart came when she and her husband Charles Smith became pastors for the Christian Church. "Chuck" served as pastor in Kenai, AK, and Gridley, KS, with Yvonne at his side, carrying out a pie ministry, serving as a Sunday school and Bible study teacher, and a pastor's wife. She later wrote about her experiences in a series of essays entitled, "Holy Socks and Other Yarns from a Preacher's Wife."

Following the couple's retirement to Canon City, CO, Yvonne carried out her compassion as a caregiver for her husband, her parents, and others. Yvonne loved to write; her booklet "Poems to the Lord with Love" reflects her deep spirituality. Her cowboy poetry illustrates her clever twist of words and her delightful sense of humor. She had a joyous zest for life and travel; some of her happiest times were trips to Washington to visit her sister Sandy.

She spent the last years of her life in the loving care of Dr. Christopher Jarvis and the staff at Sunset Manor in Waverly, KS, where she was known as Jean. The family is grateful that after a life of extending compassion to others, she was the recipient of it herself.

Jean Yvonne Smith is survived by her loving daughter and caregiver, Melodee Iles of Burlington, KS, and son artist Dave Iles of Westcliffe, CO; two granddaughters Crystal Baker of LeRoy, KS, and Amber Baker of Wichita, KS; and great-grandchildren Avah, Grace, Madison, Cayden, and Rosslyn; and her sister Sandra (Garver) Crowell of Olympia, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Mary Garver; her brother, Don Garver; and her husband Charles Smith.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the God's Storehouse at 515 Neosho Street, Burlington, KS 66839.

To honor the request of Jean Yvonne "Boots" Smith, a memorial service and family reunion will be held in her beloved mountains of Colorado in the summer.
